This canal where the women are washing their clothes is filled from the fresh water swimming pool which is fed by a spring in the town. They would wet the clothing in the water, put the article up on the wide cement step, rub soap on it, then using a scrubbing brush cover every square inch going up and down and all around with the scrubbing motions, and next rinse the clothing in buckets of clean water dipped from the canal before finally rinsing in the canal and hanging the clothes on the line to dry.
The water was sparkling clean, coming from an underground natural spring.
