Filipino Muslim girls hand stringing and double knotting the pearls we picked out at the Pearl Market--they were amazingly fast!
The Pearl Market in Manila had 180 booths just like this. I felt that we had walked into the cave where Ali Baba discovered the hidden treasures. Rows and rows of pearls of all shapes, sizes and colors! It was amazing. Most of the booths were run by Muslims.
When we arrived at Annie's Basket Factory outside Bogo (after a 3 hour + ride) we were amazed to see one large room where all styles of baskets were stacked, along with rocking chairs, tables, frames for mirrors and more that had been woven by hand by seven workers Annie hires. The actual weaving was done on a covered cement pad just outside where the weavers squat to do their work.
The "showroom" for the gorgeous baskets and other woven items made at Annie's Baskets in Bogo--if you designed something, they would make it for you. We took a bread basket we had purchased elsewhere and they said they would copy it for us.
The work these people do is beautiful with intricate woven designs. They can make anything!
